NSA Conducts Winter Meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona

NSA 2015 Winter Meeting, Scottsdale, AZ

Member companies of the National Security Alliance convened in Scottsdale, AZ in late February for the annual winter owners meeting.  The two day event was attended by representatives of eleven of the fourteen member companies from across the United States and Canada.  The meetings were hosted by NSA member Ms. Kim Matich, President & CEO of Anderson Security Agency.  The meeting venue was hosted by Guardian 8 at their Scottsdale corporate office which proved to be a great venue for the event.  Aside from the annual business meeting highlights of the event included a presentation by Robert H. Perry, Perry & Associates who discussed the current state of the contract security service industry  and other matters of relevant interest.  Also presenting was Roy Rahn, Executive Director of CALSAGA who spoke on the efforts CALSAGA has made to impact legislation in California and the willingness to work with the NSA on matters of mutual industry interest.  Special thanks to our meeting sponsors, Kim Matich who provided bus transportation to and from our dinner (and a great goody bag) at the Horney Toad Restaurant in Clear Creek, and Paul Silva & Matt  Livermore from On Guard  Apparel for sponsoring the happy hour before this great dinner of fun and good food. Paul Hughes, COO of Guardian 8 sponsored the meeting venue for the two days as well as providing each participant with a nice travel Go Bag and a great demonstration of the ProV2.  A special thanks to Sheri Klonowski  from Anderson for agreeing to serve as the taker of the minutes.  The next meeting of the NSA will be held in conjunction with the next annual ASIS International Seminar & Exhibits to be held in Anaheim, CA. this coming September.

Recently Trained GMI Officer Saves Life

On February 26, 2015, off-duty GMI Asset Protection Officer Carlos Basabe was driving home when he witnessed a motorcycle accident. Carlos immediately stopped and became the first responder on scene. Based upon his recent training, Carlos' first reaction was to keep the victim calm, then he placed a tourniquet on the wound to slow the bleeding. The victim had one very badly crushed leg and had lost the other leg. Carlos had a second witness call 911 while other witnesses looked for his missing leg. Carlos knew it would take the EMS 10-15 minutes to respond so he had to act quickly.

Thanks to Carlos’ quick actions and on-site leadership, this victim survived and doctors were able to save both of his legs. Carlos credits Michelle Cordova, GMI's Safety and CPR trainer, for teaching him how to react in such a difficult situation.

Puget Sound Security - Legislative Update, Washington State

In recent legislation efforts, the State of Washington has attempted and failed to raise its minimum wage across the board from $9.75 to $12/hour and add Seattle's Sick/Safe no reason needed paid call-offs to allow taking up to 60 hours a year in free wages. I'm told Washington already has the highest minimum wage within all 50 states (have not vetted this allegation as yet).

The deliberations are still out on if we will retain or lose our rights to execute a non-compete contract with key employees or in another bill, any employees.

A legislative action is underway but sputtering in an attempted scheme to raise B&O taxes from 1.5% on gross revenues to 3.75% on all service businesses which do not already collect sales taxes.

Initiative King, Tim Eyman has a constitutional amendment underway for next Novembers voting round to change the States Constitution so that a super legislative majority is required by law to raise taxes on business while during this session the Governor Jay Inslee which swore during in his campaign that any tax increases which hit his desk would be vetoed automatically is now trying by "Executive Order" to bypass legislation and raise taxes by over $1.11 per gallon of gas. It's environmentally referred to as the Carbon Foot Print tax. Some sources report that with all the new hybrid and electric cars hitting new sales record highs, the states revenues are declining on gasoline sales. Present legislation has already passed a bill hiking the gas tax by another 11c a gallon to totaling now some near 50c a gallon as of today's total.

Note: It is important to watch what other states are doing in order to prepare for the fact your state might follow in their footprints. Washington's favorite state to watch and follow for a long time is & has been California.
